Toyota Car Key Replacement: Keys, Fobs, Transponders & Smart Keys
Toyota has used several distinct key technologies across its lineup over the years, and understanding which type your vehicle uses matters enormously for getting a working replacement. Older Toyota models — many Corollas, Tacomas, and Camrys from the 1990s and early 2000s — use a standard cut metal key that can be duplicated with the right key blank. From the mid-2000s onward, Toyota shifted to transponder keys, which carry a microchip that communicates with the vehicle's immobilizer system. If the chip isn't present or properly programmed, the engine simply won't start — even if the physical cut of the key is perfect.
Later Toyota models, including recent Camry, RAV4, Highlander, and Prius trims, use Toyota Smart Key System proximity fobs that allow for push-button ignition and passive entry. These require both cutting and EEPROM-level programming to synchronize with the vehicle's ECU. Our technicians carry OEM-compatible programming devices and a broad inventory of key blanks, allowing us to handle this full spectrum of Toyota key types on-site — whether you need a single replacement or an entirely new key set because all copies have been lost.
